The White House
The purpose of the development is twofold. Firstly it looks at providing an extension to the side of the property to house the key living spaces in an open plan volume that takes advantage of the unique views as well as provide a connection to the under utilised garden. Secondly having moved the living spaces from the existing house to an extension this provides the opportunity to add an ensuite bedroom to the ground floor along with a designated study space that has views over the sea, as well as a further bedroom above.

From the start it was intended that the 2 storey extension should read as a single storey when viewed from Moor Lane. As a result, the side extension has purposefully been built into the hillside with the lowered parking area to minimise its visual impact. Its also really important for the existing ground floor to flow into the new living space with only a couple of steps. This creates a more natural flow between the living space and the existing house.
The Massing has intentionally been broken up between the main living space and the existing house with a light weight glazed link. This also allows a clear legibility between old and new as well as solid and void. Pushing back the link helps to create the void that becomes a very natural entrance to the property. It was also important that the new addition had its own language that is defined by the wider site. The white house is very clearly a victorian villa and the new addition needed to be read as something new and very different.
