South Lobb Farm

South Lobb Farm dated back to the 13th Century and is set within the grounds of an old Quarry. It comprises of the main farmhouse, 4 holiday cottages and an outdoor swimming pool elevated above Saunton, with far reaching coastal views. The old building presents small apertures which do not connect the occupants to the outdoors. The setting and context is a key characteristic and there is a clear disconnect between inside and out. Alterations to the main farmhouse sought to establish a stronger connection to the vistas and form an enhanced relationship with the surroundings.

Following on from initial discussion with the client we formulated a brief to add a new open plan living space with Master suite above that maximised views to the wider landscape. The extension was proposed to be visually split from the existing cottage by a minimal glazed circulation space that delineated the line between old and new.
A primary feature of the site is the long garden wall which spurs from the main building creating a boundary between the front and rear garden. The wall creates a spine; an anchor in which to connect to, ensuring a strong relationship between the existing and proposed. It was our intension for the linear wall to be incorporated into the new two storey extension. The ground floor mimics the characteristics (proportions, features, details and materiality) of the wall in an attempt to solidify the new addition and bind it to the context.
