Still Waters
Still Waters is an existing bungalow elevated off Torridge Road in the fishing village of Appledore. The 2 bedroom, single storey dwelling had reached the end of its lifecycle in its current form, and was in need of significant improvement, enlargement and modernisation. The site benefits from great estuary views, however the real beauty came as a result of elevating further, enabling views over the top of existing rooftop resulting in significantly better, uninterrupted views.

The current scale is an anomaly in the streetscape, whereas the revised design answers to the scale and height of neighbouring buildings. With that said, subservience has been sought via reducing the massing as the building rises. Each floor has a consecutively smaller floor area creating floors with increasing subservience to one another.
The first floor living space maximises the outlook, while the broken plan living arrangement (the semi-zoning of the living room from the kitchen/diner) creates a cosy, more intimate living space without the complete loss of internal interconnection.
