South Hole Farm

South Hole Farm

This is the conversion of a disused steel framed barn near Croyde as part of a Grade II listed farmstead and courtyard in the centre of the AONB. The site plan picks up on details that define the local character of the farm and use these devices to help create a defined separation between the lower and upper courtyards.

Project Location:

Croyde, North Devon

Project Size:

326m2

Service:

RIBA Stages 1-6

Completion:

Autumn 2025

In its current disused state, the barn detracted from the setting of the host farmhouse and adjacent stone barns which are Grade II listed assets. We therefore sought the improvement in quality and appearance of the lower farmstead and its wider setting to create a considered upper courtyard that relates to the historic agricultural setting. The proposed conversion of the barn will allows the development of a material palette that’s sympathetic to the historic context.
Stone has been used to define the walls that project into the landscape as well as forming the book end gables. We felt that this creates a striking end to the barn that looks directly back to the heavy masonry listed buildings within the yard below.
